“My characters are an agglomeration of past cultures and chunks of on-going time borrowed from books and newspapers, bits of people, torn remnants of Sunday best clothes which have become rags patched together like the soul.“ This is how August Strindberg once explained the characters in his scandalous drama Fräulein Julie, first performed in Copenhagen in 1889. The earl’s daughter Julie tries to seduce the servant Jean but on achieving her aim she has to acknowledge that the tables have been turned on her. He is now the stronger one and she is humiliated and cannot live with this ignominy. – An intimate psychological play, a many facetted mystery of relationships, war of the sexes – ideal ingredients for adaptation into musical drama. The intimate opera created in 1994 by Ilkka Kuusisto shows sensitive handling of the characters.  In his staging the Artistic Director Philippe Arlaud unfolds the timelessly topical aspects of the story. This is sure to be an exciting evening.
